How to keep white sneakers white, the store way.

White sneakers are the hardest colorway to own and the most rewarding to keep right. At the bench we clean thousands of white pairs a year, from Air Force 1s to Common Projects, and the difference between a pair that stays bright for years and one that grays out in months is almost never the shoe. It is the habits. Here is what we tell every customer who asks.

Wipe the same day, not the same week

Dirt that sits oxidizes into the finish. A thirty second pass with a soft damp cloth the evening you wear them removes ninety percent of what would otherwise become a permanent gray cast. Keep a microfiber cloth by the door and make it a reflex.

Know your material before you scrub

Leather tolerates gentle agitation. Knit and mesh hold soap and need low moisture work. Suede should never meet water without treatment. Most of the ruined pairs we see were damaged by the cleaning, not the wearing: household wipes strip topcoats, magic erasers sand through finishes, and bleach turns white midsoles yellow. If a product does not say it is made for sneakers, keep it away from them.

Rotate, and give pairs a day to breathe

Sweat is acidic and white uppers show it first. Wearing the same pair daily never lets moisture fully leave the lining, which accelerates yellowing at the toe box and sockliner. Two pairs in rotation more than doubles the life of both.

Sun is for drying, not for storage

UV both helps and hurts. Brief indirect sun after cleaning helps whites dry evenly, but storage in direct light yellows soles and fades stitching. Store pairs in a cool, dry spot, ideally with the laces loosened so the lining can breathe.
