Suede 101: why it is unforgiving, and how to keep it right.

Suede is leather turned inside out: the soft underside of the hide, buffed into a nap of fine fibers. That nap is what makes a suede Dunk or New Balance 990 look rich, and it is also why suede punishes mistakes that smooth leather forgives. This is the material we get the most rescue requests for, so here is how it actually works.

Why water is the enemy

Suede fibers absorb water instantly and dry stiff, matted, and often darker. A rain shower is survivable if the pair dries slowly away from heat and gets brushed after. A kitchen sponge and dish soap, which is what most people reach for, flattens the nap permanently and pushes the stain deeper. Never rub wet suede.

The brush is the whole game

A suede brush with brass and nylon bristles, used dry and in one direction, lifts surface dirt and revives the nap. Do it after every few wears and most suede pairs never need more. For dry stains, an eraser made for suede takes off scuffs the brush cannot. Oil and salt are a different story: they bond with the fibers and need professional extraction.

Protect before the first wear

A quality water and stain repellent, applied before the first wear and refreshed every few months, is the single best money you can spend on suede. It will not make the pair waterproof, but it buys you the time to blot a spill instead of wearing it forever. We apply waterproof protection as a finishing treatment on request.

What professional suede care looks like

At the bench, suede gets a dry clean first: brush, eraser, and low-moisture solutions made for napped leather, then steam to reset the nap and color-safe treatments for stains. It is slow, hand-only work, which is why our Signature Clean exists. If your suede pair already took the damage, send it in before you experiment: our mail-in service reaches every US city, and reviving suede is one of the most satisfying things we do.
